Science Week

The theme for National Science Week in 2018 was Game Changers and Change Makers, which gave students the opportunity to find out about many developments they did not know about. For instance who knew that bubbles are used to separate metal minerals from their ores, that burns victims can be healed with spray on skin and that cosmetics are made from crushed rocks? The Year 10 students created a brilliant lunchtime display of their practical investigations, which proved to be of great interest to students and staff alike. The annual paper plane competition was held again (this year in very windy conditions!) and the annual quiz competition saw a higher number of entries than ever. Congratulations to all of our competition winners, to all of the participants and a big thank you to all of the staff who helped with the displays and competitions.

Seray- It was a fun and enjoyable experience. It made me feel confident and powerful that I could be independent in a place as Federation Square.

Darshanaa- I felt comfortable in talking to the public and they were all approachable, which contradicted what I previously thought. It was great to discuss my moral dilemma with the wider community.

Year 10's Day of Dialogue

Dear parents,

On the 31st of August the RV department took all the year 10 students to `Our Lady of Sion College` for the annual Day of Dialogue event. Our main focus was to enhance understanding of other religions as well as to share ideas/cultures between religions. Here are some feedback of the day from our students.

Mariam: I liked how we got into groups and talks about our religions without being judged.
Sarah: I liked the food
Nilofar: Great opportunity to learn about other religions.
Busra: The excursion was most definitely the best we have been on. All year. The girls were so inclusive and kind. Everyone felt included and had fun.
Nermin: We got to learn the ins and outs of different religions.
Angel: Today was such an insightful experience, we learnt so much about other religions. We had an opportunity to respect one another.

VCE Psychology

Throughout the term, the VCE Psychology students have been investigating various states of consciousness and in particular, sleep. The students had the opportunity to visit the Epworth Sleep Lab to consolidate their understanding of this topic. They were presented a lecture by a sleep scientist where all their sleep questions were answered.

Ariana kindly volunteered to be our ‘guinea pig’ for the day. The sleep scientist connected various devices to Ariana which measured different physiological recordings. Whilst Ariana was left alone to sleep, the remaining students were in the sleep scientist’s office interpreting her readings on the computer. It was quite fascinating to observe the changes occurring in Ariana’s brain, eye, heart and diaphragm as she drifted off to sleep. A highly engaging, educational session enjoyed by all!
